The Question That Won’t Go Away

Should we be afraid of artificial intelligence?

It is a question that refuses to stay quiet.

For decades, the idea of intelligent machines has lived in the shadows of our imagination—machines that think, decide, and eventually turn against their creators. We have seen it in movies, heard it in warnings from scientists, and felt it in the uneasy silence that follows every major technological breakthrough. From killer robots to self-aware systems, the story has always followed the same path: we create something powerful… and then lose control of it.

But today, something has changed.

Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept confined to science fiction. It is no longer just a storyline or a theoretical debate. It is here—quietly, invisibly, and deeply embedded in our daily lives. It decides what videos you watch, what posts you see, what products you are shown, and even, in some cases, what opportunities you are given. It helps banks approve loans, assists doctors in diagnosing diseases, and powers the systems that influence millions of decisions every single day.

And yet, despite all this power, something feels… unclear.

We are surrounded by AI, but most of us do not truly understand it.

We hear words like “machine learning,” “algorithms,” and “neural networks,” but they often feel like black boxes—complex systems that operate beyond our comprehension. Because of this, two extreme reactions have emerged. On one side, there is fear: the belief that AI could one day become uncontrollable, even dangerous. On the other side, there is blind trust: the assumption that AI is intelligent, objective, and somehow “knows” what it is doing.

Both of these views are incomplete.
